Marketing On A Budget – Keyboard and Robot Army

31 07 2008

This is more related to Art Klick than Million Dollar Leg, but anyone into guerrilla marketing (marketing on a budget) might find this interesting.

About 7 weeks ago Molten Media gave me about 10 computers, 5 monitors and 30 keyboards for free. I pulled the computers apart to use the electronic parts to make robot’s on canvas. This was my first real attempt at art and is was really fun.

I aim to place the robot’s around the local tertiary arts institutes with flyers to promote Art Klick to New Zealand’s talented students. If they sign up with Art Klick and I use their artwork for part of the Million Dollar Leg tattoo they get $1,000 – which should hopefully encourage them to join up!

My friend Simon and I also placed the 30 spray painted keyboards around Christchurch CBD a few weeks ago for some fun – (only two got stolen!) Got some good feedback and will probably do it again at some stage.

Below are a few pics of the robots and keyboards.

PS – Also working on making a video to explain the Million Dollar Leg concept more clearly as there still seems to be some confusion, aiming for it to be out early next week.

Thanks for visiting the MDLP blog,

James

Zillion and eBay online auctions are both live at $500 reserves

19 07 2008

The first tattoo (above) is “The Orange Bangle” by loyal and talented Art Klick artist Kim Loasby. The tattoo is 40 square cm which would be $20,000 NZD. I don’t expect anyone to pay that much so have decided to sell half of it on Zillion and the other half on international auction site eBay.

Each auction is for half of the 40cm tattoo (20cm each auction) and have $500 reserves.

If you are an advertiser and value website traffic and brand exposure this is bargain. By winning the auction you will be mentioned in physical and social media, on the facebook groups, blogs and the YouTube series.

“Web 2.0″ features such as social media, social networking and viral campaigns are some of the most cost effective ways to promote your brand to millions of people and get quality visitors to your website, if done correctly. Within three days The Million Dollar Leg Project went international and had been talked about in UK, Russian, Polish, Spanish, Greek and Chinese news websites plus been on 4 national radio stations, the front page of The Guardian in Ashburton, in The Press (The South Island’s largest newspaper and in Avenues magazine.

By being the winners of these auctions you are bound to get more exposure than any kind of press release and at a far more affordable price than a viral campaign designed for your company alone. Your peers will view you as an early adopter and leader into new advertising mediums while also supporting New Zealand art and charities.

Plus it will be fun! I’m a good kid – I will happily represent your company as much as possible and be very thankful that you took a risk on me.

I know this idea is pretty different, but if done right we could get a lot of great companies together on one website, some cool artwork tattooed and a lot of website traffic.

With all the financial doom and gloom, murder/abuse/abduction/scandals etc that plague the news I hope this can be a bit of fun and show the lighter side of life :)

Take it easy,

James

17 07 2008

Just a quick post before I go to bed (4 hrs sleep).

Half of first tattoo for sale on Zillion.co.nz and half on eBay.com

17 07 2008

Yesterday afternoon I got the outline for the first tattoo at Inkgrave in Edgeware, Christchurch.

Got some great media coverage with CTV filming my first TV interview and Blair from The Cut Lunch show on local student radio station RDU recording the action for a podcast doco.

The first tattoo (below) is “The Orange Bangle” by loyal and talented Art Klick artist Kim Loasby.

I have also got a small installation planned for Christchurch CBD this morning to draw attention to this blog and advertise the two listings.

AND I got my first official paying sponsor last night! Brendan Smith the founder of Apage.co.nz a new social networking website for New Zealand. Apage is still in the development phase and I am advising him with a redesign for the whole site into a whole new (secret) niche that I think has huge potential both in New Zealand and internationally.

So keep an eye on the auctions and this blog as I try to post news every day due to the constantly developing nature of this idea and what is involved.

If you miss out on this auction or are interested in becoming a sponsor/advertiser please check out the new packages I have made up to suit everyone.

Also – are there any flash animation designers out there who would be interested in building the MillionDollarLeg.co.nz website – should be a fun project (as this one is just temporary).

Below are some pretty pics for y’all.

There should be something for everyone here with some great benefits.
It is highly likely at all sponsors will get a huge amount of exposure and traffic to their website – and hopefully sales and new clients. With over 7,000 page views in 6 days and international coverage it is looking good so far.

Another benefit is www.milliondollarleg.co.nz is already well respected by Google and by linking out to your website it should improve your Google rankings. Not to mention the links to your site from other media and blog coverage of the stories etc. (News sites are well respected by Google.)

This is an exciting new idea that will result in people identifying your company as an innovator and early adopter. By being associated with the “Next Level of Marketing” you will appeal to a wide range of demographics and develop your public image.

Please note: All companies should read Unleashing The Ideavirus by Seth Godin – it is totally free and highly recommended (along with the rest of his books – Purple Cow, Meatball Sundae etc).
Also subscribe to his blog for daily tips and advice.
